USB3.0: Super-fast plug connectors for the new USB3.0 standard

Munich, April 2011 – Yamaichi Electronics has expanded its portfolio of I/O connectors with the super-fast USB 3.0 series.

In addition to its extensive line of USB 2.0, mini, and microUSB connectors, Yamaichi is now also offering a line of USB 3.0 interfaces. This brings Yamaichi into the high-speed USB connector market, because unlike the existing USB 2.0 interface (up to a maximum of 480 Mbit/sec), USB 3.0 connectors carry up to 5 Gbit/sec. Of course, downward compatibility with the existing USB 2.0 standard is a given.

Overmolded D38999 Circular Connector

Munich, April 2011 – Yamaichi Electronics now offer the significantly improved processing of circular connectors for the aerospace, military, motor sports, maritime and rail industries. Connector elements from the MIL-DTL series standard are increasingly used in these industrial sectors. D38999 plug connectors, for example, are characterised by the high reliability under extremely demanding environmental conditions. Additional advantages are their proportionally very low weight and simple use.

Yamaichi's improvement is in the insertion molding of the housing parts. This more than corrects a weak point of the conventional D38999. The weakness of other providers is the processing of the housing. Until now, so-called shrink-formed parts were fitted to a given plug connector under enormous heat in a very costly and difficult shrinking process. In addition to the processing effort and associated cost of manufacturer, the purchase prices of shrink-formed parts are also very high.

Insertion moulding of the housing parts isn't an entirely new approach. However, earlier attempts by other providers have failed, generally due to the technical implementation. The particular difficulty is the physical adhesion. No permanently solid connection could be formed between the molded material and the metallic surface of the plug connector and the cable sheath. The insertion molding of the housing thus separated even after slight mechanical stress.

Yamaichi, thanks to many years of experience with cable assemblies and insertion molding technology, including with photovoltaics, managed to succeed in creating a permanent connection at the molecular level between the individual components of the plug connector, injection molded material and cable sheathing. In addition to enormous mechanical resilience, this also means a high level of protection from moisture, up to IP67.

There are no limits to the choice of shape or colour, and any take-off angle can be fabricated. Different degrees of hardness can also be achieved, from very flexible to extremely stiff and robust, by using custom material mixtures.

The insertion moulding process is far more reproducible and reliable than the processing of shrink-formed parts with heat application. The result is also significantly more aesthetic in comparison. Despite professional processing, there are always slight visual differences after the shrinking process. Insertion molding is also much gentler for the cable and the plug connector.

Customer-specific solutions can frequently amortise from lot sizes of about 300 units, depending on the price of the comparable shrink-formed parts. For standard variants which Yamaichi already tooled up, the break-even can be significantly lower. Yamaichi is happy to consult with its customers on an individual basis.

Excellent Spring Probe reliability

Y-RED is equipped with a new high performance spring probe with crown plunger tip for BGA and conical plunger tip for LGA and QFN packages. The two-piece pin combines extraordinary mechanical and electrical behaviour. The contact resistance is far below 50mΩ and shows an outstanding stability up to 500,000 mating cycles. The pin is available for the standard temperature range of -40°C up to +125°C and a high temperature range of -55°C up to +150°C.

 

As with all products from Yamaichi Electronics this too is RoHS compliant.

Y-Con® RJ45 jack with magnetic filter and LED light pipes

For more reliable signal transmission in industrial ethernet networks

 

Munich, May 2010 – The Y-ConJack-31 is a new RJ45 connector jack for PCB with integrated magnetic filter, and LED light pipes for the function display. The jack is particularly suited to industrial applications such as industrial ethernet.

 

The function principle of the integrated magnetic filter module definitely makes a decisive contribution to the signal conditioning, thanks to the galvanic separation (potential separation) and the additional components. Overlayed disruptions are thus effectively separated or faded out by the wanted signal. Current peaks, highly frequented overlays or electro smog can lead to malfunctions in the applications, particularly in an industrial environment.

 

The 90°-angled jack for the THR PCB is also fitted with an all-round optimised EMC shielding made of nickel-plated brass.

 

The two integrated light pipes on the left and right next to the mating face lead the light forwards onto each of the LED light sources mounted onto the PCB, hence emitting a function signal. The colour selection is dependent only on the LED which is used, hence making the jack very flexible for all applications.

 

Besides this, like all diverse versions of the Y-ConRJ45 plugs and jacks, the Y-ConJack-31 is fitted with data contacts and two additional power contacts. A major advantage of the Y-Con RJ45 series, these power contacts are universally integrated into all components. This makes costly double wiring superfluous for electrical supplies, which would have to be protected especially for raw field applications. That would mean double the amount of work and expense, which Yamaichi solutions resourcefully avoid.

 

Within the Y-ConRJ45 series the described component can additionally be protected as per protection classes IP69K, IP68, IP67 and IP20 from external mechanical environmental influences. Reliable protective housing made from high-quality materials such as PBT or zinc die-casting are a component of the series.

 

As with all products from Yamaichi Electronics this too is RoHS compliant.

MatchCon: Highest Possible Contact Reliance in every Application

Yamaichi Electronics introduces its new connector series MatchCon for a wide range of applications.

Yamaichi Electronics enlarges its portfolio of board-to-board and board-to-cable connecters with two new connector types, MatchCon and BoardFit. The MatchCon connectors are described here.

The new MatchCon connectors (MBP/MBS series) are characterized by a special contact design which is particularly qualified for applications with strong vibration exposure, e.g. in the automotive area. Due to positioning springs the male and female contacts interlock strongly so that the typical fretting of tin-plated contacts can be eliminated through the high contact force.

MatchCon is based on a 1.27mm pitch, offers a wide range of 90° and 180° board connectors not only in SMT but also with TH pins. The connection to the cable is secured by IDC technology. Another locking feature allows an additional locking between the board and cable connector. Currently the different versions are available with pin counts from 6 to 26.
Additionally to this connector series Yamaichi Electronics offers a wide range of board-to-board and board-to-cable solutions with different pitches and design versions,

e.g. the new BoardFit connectors (P3/P4 series)

IP67/68/69K Bluetooth USB dongle

Now available for Yamaichi´s industrial Y-Con series
The Y-ConBluetooth-Dongle-1 is an IP67/68/69K device for wireless data transmission according to the Bluetooth SIG 2.0 standard.

Y-ConBluetooth-Dongle-1 is a Class 2 device working on 2.4 GHz, with a maximum data rate of 3 Mbit/s. The built in antenna allows a range of ca. 10 m. The operating temperature range is -10°C to +80°C, and the USB interface connector has a durability of ca. 1,500 mating cycles.

When mated together with Y-ConFlange-10, the IP67/68/69K Bluetooth device offers the perfect solution for short range cable free networks in industrial applications.

Like all Yamaichi products, it is also RoHS compliant.

Metal housing Y-ConCover- 40 “Twist-Lock”

The new Y-ConCover-40 is made from high-quality zinc die casting and supplements the PBT housing of the previous Y-ConCover-10, which has been tried and proven for years. It is designed for use in all applications in which even greater mechanic protection is required.

Apart from enhanced mechanic stability, the field designable Y-ConCover-40 offers a further benefit: the previous push-lock principle with locking hook has been supplemented with a screw cap mechanism. Locking is still guaranteed by the tried and proved locking hook, but the “twist-lock“ screw cap makes it possible to release the cable connector from the housing flange with ease, particularly on applications with little space or poor accessibility. For example, connections on installed engines, in factory plants or in on-board networks of building site equipment and ships. The tested operating temperature of the material ranges from -40°C to +120°C. Diverse colour alloys are available on request.

Already presented in spring, the metal housing Y-ConCover-30, a retrofittable component for existing cable assemblies, which can be mounted and screwed on around the plastic housing Y-ConCover-10 (protection class IP69K/ IP68/ IP67), remains in the programme.

To date the Y-Con series has been assembled from Y-ConRJ45, Y-ConProfiNet, Y-ConUSB and Y-ConIEEE (FireWire). All these interfaces are available to the well-known IP69K plastic housing. Concerning RJ45 it is now supplemented by Y-Con Cover-40. As for IP20 protection, Yamaichi already offers Y-ConCover-20. This is a robust metal housing, which ensures additional disruption signal protection up to 5KV.

As with all products from Yamaichi this too is RoHS compliant

Ultra-flat SIM card holder FMS006-5000-0

With a height of only 1.5 mm, Yamaichi is continuously extending its range of ultra-flat and extremely space-saving card connectors for Flash and SIM cards.

An 8-pin SIM reader with a Push/Push mechanism in ultra-low profile design is already available. Yamaichi now also offers the manual 6-pin version with the same low height of 1.5mm.

Unlike the push/push mechanism, the component has been developed for the so-called manual insert of the card. The contacts with a high-quality gold surface guarantee a service life of at least 5000 mating cycles. The generally minimised cover measurements of 16.45 mm insertion width x 20.55 mm length, together with the ultra-low profile design, make the connector suited to designs with the smallest of space. The SIM card itself measures 15.00 mm width x 25.00 mm length x 0.76 mm height.

The applications are found, amongst others, in GSM modules, mobile telephones, POS terminals (point of sales), portable devices such as PDA smart phones and personal smart card devices. The SIM card is sometimes also referred to as a SMART or SAM card (Secure Application Module).

The connector has both excellent electric and mechanic features. The coplanitary of the contact is specified to 0.10 mm, thus ensuring that it can be used safely. The connector is delivered in Tape & Reel packaging for the fully automated pick-and-place SMT assembly on the upper side of the PCB (top mount).

Conform to GSM11.11 standard for the European mobile telephone system, Ultra Low Profile FMS006-5000-0 is already in series production.

Ultra-flat 8-Pin SIM card holder

Flattest design on the market

Yamaichi is extending its range of SIM card holders with the FMS008-6000-0 in a Super Low Profile Design. The height is only 1.5 mm. The component is fitted with a switch and comfortable push/push mechanism.

The uniquely low height of 1.5 mm and the generally small dimensions of 18.70 mm width x 29.90 mm depth make the connector well suited to designs with the smallest of space. The applications are used, amongst others, in GSM modules, mobile phones, POS terminals (point of sale), portable devices such as PDA Smart Phones and Personal Smart Card devices. The SIM card is sometimes also referred to as a SMART or SAM card (Secure Application Module).

The new card reader has eight pins instead of the conventional six contacts to date. The card reader can thus also be used for applications with extended safety functions.

The Yamaichi SIM card connector for SMT assembly to the upper side of the PCB (top mount) is fitted with tried and tested and comfortable push/push insertion and defined ejection mechanism from Yamaichi. The coplanarity of the contact is specified and guaranteed to 0.08 mm and can thus be safely used. The connector is delivered in Tape & Reel packaging for the fully automated pick-and-place assembly.

The Super Low Profile FMS008-6000-0 goes into series production from autumn 2006. Product drawings for adapting the PCB layout are of course already available.

New USB stick from Y-Con series

The new memory stick Y-ConUSB-Stick-1 which meets the highest protection requirements in the industrial sector and has a USB high-speed interface to USB 2.0 standard. It has a total storage capacity of 512 MB (up to 2GB on request) and, like the whole Y-Con series, meets the requirements of IP67/68/69K. This means it can also be used under extreme conditions, such as storing measurement data on construction machinery which easily soils or for data exchange on industrial facilities, as well as the updating of programmes or the recording of error messages.

The main advantage is that the USB stick can collect data over longer periods of time too. When the stick is full, data can be read off on every conventional USB interface and immediately used again.

Transferred data are additionally displayed too, by way of a flashing blue LED. The USB stick is compatible with the operating systems MS-Windows 98SE, ME, XP and Macintosh OS X.

The recommended operating temperature ranges from -25°C to +80°C and the life expectancy caters for up to 1500 connector mating cycles.

The Y-ConUSB-Stick-1 comes in standard blue, but is also available in black.

Like all products from Yamaichi this is also RoHS compatible.

Metal cover for Y-Con series.

The Y-Con series is well known for its unique IP69K protection level, and now there is an additional metal cover available (Y-ConCover-30), which also enhances the mechanical protection should it be required. The Y-ConCover-30 can be retrofitted to existing cable assemblies by simply screwing the two metal covers together. The screws are made from stainless steel, and the robust cover from high-quality die-cast zinc. Target applications are, for example, heavy-duty connections such as factory systems, oil rigs or in on-board building equipment networks and ships. The operating temperature of the product is -20°C to +120°C. All the existing Y-Con RJ45, ProfiNet, USB and IEEE (FireWire) IP67/68/69K housings can be delivered with the Y-ConCover-30 metal cover, or if required, it can also be retrofitted. For IP20 cable assemblies, Yamaichi offers a robust metal cover: Y-ConCover-20, which guarantees additional interference signal protection up to 5KV.

Yamaichi supplements its range of supports of chart microSD with the PJS008-2100

The flattest available design ever
Yamaichi is supplementing its range of microSD card connectors with the PJS008-2100-* in the super low profile design (microSD previously came in TransFlash card format). This addition means a top-mount version is now available to microSD for the SMT mount on the top side of the PCB assembly.
The low-profile model PJS008-2000-* with a building height of only 1.85 mm is still available. This is a reversed type version, i.e. for the assembly on the bottom side of the PCB.
Both models are fitted with state-of-the-art and tried and tested
push/push insert and defined eject mechanics from Yamaichi. Further features are a mechanism, which prevents inserting the card on the wrong side, a card retention mechanism, and a switch for automatic card recognition.
The Super Low Profile PJS008-2100-* is in series production and immediately available in large numbers on “tape & reel” for fully automated pick-and-place” assembly.

First Connectors YAMAICHI MCH for MicroTCA

Yamaichi Electronics introduces its new MCH connectors as part od CN084 series. They are suggested in four different versions and are used as adapters between the Micro TCA motherboard and MCH (Micro TCA Carrier Hub)module .

- New MCH connector's Significant advantage is its great flexibility of configuration: its 7 possible combinations between motherboard and the MCH.

- Motherboard and MCH connector are "card edge type" linked, which reduces the forces of connection and disconnection.

- The tolerance free assembly between connector & modules provides very high contact stability.

- Series CN084 is qualified for very high bitrates up to 12,5 Gbps.

as usual, this YAMAICHI products reveals very good high frequency characteristics.

NEW Tray-type SIM Card Connector : Two-point contact is a world premiere

The latest reversed type SIM connector from Yamaichi Electronics is the first in the market to provide a two-point contact on all six pins preventing electrical interruption when the connector is dropped or otherwise subjected to mechanical stress and vibrations.
FMS006-3000-1 is a so-called tray-type for manual card insertion and extraction. The tray is made in one die casting including the card and contact section, thus eliminating the likelihood of accidentially separating the card tray from the rest of the connector. Furthermore, POM (Polyoxymethylene, also known as Acetal) used for the tray material, is hard to break. Anyway, tray can be exchanged. As a reversed type the connector is soldered on the bottom of the PCB.
Dimensions: 27.6 x 18.95 x 2.20mm typ.

The microSD Card gets connected

Yamaichi Electronics introduces its card connector model PJS008-2000 for microSD memory cards designed with a small form factor and a mounting profile of mere 1.85 mm (reverse mount type).
It features a tactile push-lock/push-eject mechanism the card travels only 3.00 to 4.35mm from its locked position to its ejected position. A special card-brake provision prevents the card from flying out. Moreover, strengthened contact on the power supply & GND pad of the card effectively prevents electrical interruption. The PJS008 series is RoHS compliant and shipped in embossed carrier tapes for automated assembly.

About microSD™ The new microSD card (formerly TransFlashTM) measures 11mm x 15mm x 1mm. Built-in security features allow to store secure content just like an SD card. Major applications are mobile phones and portable music players.
Presently, this format is supported and used in products of mobile phone manufacturers. Capacities are already ranging from 128MB to 512MB. Like miniSD, microSD cards can be used directly in SD slots with an adapter.

Y-Con Series extended with components for ProfiNet

Building on the success of ProfiBus, the ProfiNet standard is set to become one of the most important cabling standards for industrial automation applications.
The rugged ProfiNet components have been added to the Y-Con series which has proven itself successful over the past few years, and offers protection ratings of IP69K, IP68, IP67 and IP20 for various application environments.

The four-stranded ProfiNet wire has a PUR sheathing for use in industrial environments and can withstand at least 1 million bending cycles when used in the drag chain. It is specified for Cat 5e and suitable for temperatures from -20°C to +80°C.

The Y-Con ProfiNet connector employs piercing contacts, and the mating face conforms to the RJ45 standard. It can thereby be used with standard RJ45 jacks and is backwards compatible.

As an additional service Yamaichi also offers ready-made cable assemblies for industrial ProfiNet applications.

Yamaichi is increasing the product portfolio for AdvancedMC applications

MicroTCA connector in Compression Mount now also available (CN080 series)

Munich, February 2006 – Yamaichi Electronics has developed a backplane connector which is compliant to MicroTCA, a specification currently being drafted by PICMG. MicroTCA complements AdvancedTCA/ AdvancedMC for low to mid-range telecom applications. Thanks to compression mount technology the CN080 connector is engineered for high transmission rates up to 12.5Gbps. Connection to the backplane is facilitated without through holes and soldering.

Key features of the MicroTCA system include small system footprint, low power, small module size, low cost and advanced management facilities. It is a modular, open systems approach as a complementary solution to AdvancedTCA for cost constrained applications like: small scale network elements and service nodes, modular telecom line units, micro base stations, wireless access devices or PBX. MicroTCA has also generated interest in non-telecom market segments, such as medical or transportation.

Yamaichi Electronics also offer all four specified AdvancedMC connectors for the AdvancedTCA standard, B, B+, AB and A+B+ types in Compression Mount Technology (CMT).
A MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH, formerly VCM plug) and other products for the MicroTCA and AdvancedTCA standards are under development.

NEW : FireWire for Industrial Applications

With Y-ConIEEE, Yamaichi has added another protected interface to the existing Y-ConRJ45 and Y-ConUSB series for industrial applications.
Due to its high data rates (with Y-Con - IEEE1394b up to 800Mbit/s), the standard is capable of transferring all relevant data for the industrial environment via one medium, and can even take over traditional field bus tasks. Temperature range for Y-ConIEEE is from – 20°C to + 85°C.
In order to make the connection industrially suitable, Yamaichi has laid out the plug side with a robust PUR-jacketed IEEE cable. The standard length of the cable assemblies is two metres for both the IP69K and IP20 versions. Other cable lengths and plug combinations are available on request.
iWLAN products (Y-Con iWLAN series) are currently available too in the Y-Con Series.

NEW : CompactFlash™ Card Reader With Special Contact Protection

Yamaichi Electronics introduces a new CompactFlash™ card reader equipped with a special “pin protection” system

A special blocking mechanism ensures that only CompactFlash™ cards can be inserted. In this way, the contacts are protected from vandalism and damage.

The blocking force exceeds 40 N, and the system is designed for 10,000 mating cycles. Contact is made with the PCB via straddle-mount contacts. Complete modules, including customized PCBs, can also be implemented.

Yamaichi Electronics extends their FRS series with a combo 4-in-1 Flash Card connector FRS012-2000-0 which, as 5-in-1 FRS008-3100-0 supports the new xD Picture Card, only omitting SmartMedia format. In turn, this new device has a Push/Push mechanism and a metal shield. Due to its very small form factor of 47 x 32.7 x 4.8 mm the combo connector can be utilized in many applications, such as digital TVs, printers, card readers, notebooks, PDAs and other mobile applications. Munich, April 2005 – The continuous miniaturization of mobile applications and the resulting shrinking of module sizes requires ever smaller pitches. This miniaturization also presents a challenge to the socket manufacturers, as not only the reliability, but also the processing capability of the contact systems for Test & Burn-In applications must be ensured. Yamaichi Electronics shows how obstacles are overcome on the way to a producible electromechanical Ultra Fine-Pitch socket, once again demonstrating its technological leadership.

The challenges were, in particular, electrically and mechanically reliable high-quality precision contact systems, the consideration of the requirements of the Burn-In board and finally a sound cost-benefit ratio.

Interface to the Burn-In Board
Compression Mount Technology (CMT) was recognized as the best solution here, as it can be realized without any great effort in comparison to Through Hole (TH) or Surface Mount Technology (SMT). The flexible buckling beam contacts are pressed onto the bond surfaces of the PCB, which is brought about by screwing the socket on the PCB. Yamaichi looks back on decades of experience with CMT in the Test and Burn-In sector. With a pitch of 0.4 mm however, there is so little space available that a “fan-out” using an auxiliary PCB (interposer) is normally necessary in order to ensure the routability of the Burn-In boards. This would have a negative effect on the electrical performance and the product costs. Yamaichi meets this challenge by realising the routing within the socket, achieving a PCB foot pattern of 0.4 mm x 0.6 mm. This not only ensures technological and cost-optimized producibility, but also trouble-free socket installation. The 0.4 mm pitch socket can therefore be used as a direct CMT socket. The contact is extremely reliable, as existing technologies have merely been refined and enhanced. Furthermore the costs for the otherwise customary auxiliary PCB interposer are no longer required.

Contacting the BGA/CSP Ultra Fine Pitch
The ball bonds of the IC are contacted by means of the so-called buckling beam which is extremely space-saving due to it being vertically pressed on, and which also possesses excellent mechanical load qualities. Possible effects of the larger pin length on the electrical characteristics are negligible, as the semi-conductor device to be contacted operate in the “low current range” and the burn-in is carried out at “low frequency”.

It would be pointless to list the advantages and disadvantages of all the other individual contacting systems at this point, whether tweezer style, spring probe or conducting polymers etc. The reasons for the rejection of these alternatives as being inefficient or not feasible for a mechanical point of view are in any case the high costs (spring pin), the large space requirement (tweezer style) or the electromechanical weaknesses (e.g. geometrical ball deformations, wear, coplanarity problems, soiling, adhesion, oxidation etc).

With the BGA/CSP 0.4 mm pitch socket from the NP437 series, Yamaichi impressively demonstrates that reliable Ultra Fine Pitch applications are no longer a problem in Test & Burn technology. A breakthrough has been accomplished here by Yamaichi that was essential, due to the already constantly growing demands of the market for increasingly miniaturized and multi-functional applications. Yamaichi is the professional partner who demonstrates as in the above case, that solutions are found by means of the adaptation of additional functions to established socket architectures, which ultimately increase the yield and therefore also the profitability and efficiency of the customer.

Munich, March 2005 - Yamaichi Electronics announces the introduction of a new Y-Con component offering industry-protected connection and wiring solutions: the Y-ConCoupler-1* which enables the easy and fast extension of existing cable runs.

Together with the Y-Con series flange, this coupler module is IP68 and IP67 protected. Metric cable glands can also be used together with an adapter plate.

The modules can also be screw mounted on a wall, and stacked vertically or horizontally thanks to the integrated mounting rails. The coupler module is available in black or blue.

The Y-ConJack-25C is a coupler jack for the Y-ConCoupler and can be equipped with repeater electronics if needed.

The jack has 8 data and 2 additionally integrated power contacts. These two power contacts offer tremendous benefits: a second wiring for power (up to 2.1A or 50V DC) is therewith made unnecessary. This saves double effort and more importantly double costs.

High Speed Connector System
The alternative for thin coaxial cables

– Yamaichi Electronics presents a new generation of high-speed connectors and cables. With the Non-ZIF connectors of the HF series in connection with special YFLEX cables of the YFB series, board-to-cable connections featuring transmission speeds up to 1.1 Gbps can be realized - without any elaborate and cost-intensive cable assembly!

The HF series is characterised by its compact design and a special push-lock mechanism to lock the flexprint in place. The special flexprint “YFLEX” which is based on a LCP insulation is adapted to the connector and ensures an integrated concept. Thanks to this special YFLEX technology by Yamaichi excellent high-frequency data transfer rates can be achieved and absolutely fine structures are feasible. Different standard cable lengths and layouts are available but custom designed flex layouts and lengths can be integrated on request as well.

The complete system consisting of the HF connector and the YFLEX guarantees brilliant crosstalk and EMC characteristics and an impedance of 100 Ohm (differential pair). The performance of the system with 1.1 Gbps is proved in respective eye diagrams. The connectors are designed for reflow soldering and pick-and-place mounting from the tape and reel packaging.

With the new HF503 series connectors the existing portfolio is consistently extended. Thus a complete product family is available for the use in high speed applications:

HF501 + YFB03: 38 pin / 0.5mm pitch
HF502 + YFB07: 20 pin / 0.6mm pitch
HF503 + YFB10: 32 and 60 pin / 0.5mm pitch

The systems are preferably used for LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signalling). Typical applications are HF test devices, base stations, networks, digital TV, set top boxes or medical imaging equipment.
